Over the course of 50 years, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and its partners have committed vast quantities of time, expertise and money into better understanding the complexity of the ocean environment surrounding the US outer continental shelf.
To mark this 50-year milestone, BOEM wanted to celebrate and highlight the innovation, hard work and great outcomes that had been achieved by the experts and research partners that have and continue to contribute to its Environment Studies Program (ESP). Their challenge was how to convey complex scientific learning gathered from over 3,000 studies that have occurred over the last 50 years into a 5 minute video that celebrated this significant milestone in BOEM’s history without diluting the magnitude of what had been achieved in a way that was accessible and understandable to the layperson.
Truescape offered a solution in the form of a video visualization that was not only informative but engaging and visually compelling.
A succinct script clearly summarized key successes and benefits from 50 years of ocean stewardship, acknowledging the multiple partners who have contributed to the ESP.
The video integrated easy to understand visual data, computer-generated graphics, photos and film. Three-dimensional graphics combined economic and scientific information with images of the natural features they measured, effectively translating BOEM’s complex and multifaceted scientific work into seemingly simple graphs and images.
Computer generated representations of normally unseeable marine elements such as currents, undersea mineral deposits, and the migration patterns of sea life reinforced BOEM’s understanding of the marine habitat and its ability to balance environmental and economic issues and opportunities.
The resulting five-minute video distilled wide-ranging and complex knowledge, accumulated over generations, into recognizable elements that leaves audiences both reassured, and excited about BOEM’s future work.
In summary, BOEM was able to:
- Celebrate, educate and inform
- Translate multiple complex projects and achievements into easily understandable visual elements
- Acknowledge partnership and the results of shared learning
- Engender trust and affirm their authority to continue their work.
