Minesa dedicated six years of planning to ensure their Soto Norte mining project in Colombia would be built to the highest environmental, socioeconomic, and engineering standards. Yet local communities still had concerns, and the biggest was how the tailings would be safely stored, stabilized and managed.
Minesa turned to Truescape to convey exactly how their industry-leading dry stack facility would, filter, process, and safely contain the tailings that are produced from the mining process. Just as important was to communicate how the facility would be integrated back into the environment post-closure and monitored for a further 12 years. Ensuring there was no risk to the surrounding communities or environment.
Truescape created a 3D visualization that clearly highlighted the engineering and design standards that were used to design and construct the dry stack tailings facility. (such as removal of 85% of the moisture that can cause structural instability) and visually reinforced how they were applied in the design and construction of the facility.
By combining images of the current landscape with visuals of the proposed facility, it was clear that Minesa had chosen a location for the facility that would integrate within the existing topography and environment. By using a natural watershed that has survived seismic and other natural events, it was obvious how Minesa’s drainage systems would work in unison with nature and gravity to facilitate water removal from the facility.
The 3D ‘slicing’ of the mountain shows construction from ground level upwards, including the safety and stabilization systems built within it. Viewers are then taken through the process by which each section of processed tailings will be stacked, compacted, stabilized, and secured with a rock-filled dike.
We are even able to see the project and its environs evolve over 15 years, as each section is closed, waterproofed, and replanted.
